Adverbials of place


We use adverbials of place to describe:

Location

We use prepositions to talk about where someone or something is.
 Examples:
  • He was standing by the table.
  • You’ll find it in the cupboard.
  • Sign your name here – at the bottom of the page.

Direction

We use adverbials to talk about the direction where someone or something is moving.
Examples:
  • Walk past the bank and keep going to the end of the street.
  • The car door is very small so it’s difficult to get into.

Distance

We use adverbials to show how far things are:
Examples:
  • Birmingham is 250 kilometers from London.
  • We were in London. Birmingham was 250 kilometers away.

Delexical verbs like have, take, make and give   Patterns with common verbs and nouns? We often use common verbs like have and take with nouns like a shower , a drink : I took a shower = I showered. She had a drink = She drank something. We call these delexical verbs because the important part of the meaning is taken out of the verb and put into the noun . We often put adjectives in front of the noun: I took a cold shower. She had a nice, refreshing drink. The verbs used most frequently in this way are: have take make give We also use go and do as delexical verbs, but they have different patterns: Shall we go swimming this afternoon?
